Dig a Little Deeper: The Power of the Gospel

Emotions are incredibly complex. We experience a mix of emotions all at once, such as during a major life change. We can be excited, scared, and sad all at the same time.

While love itself is not an emotion, despite what many believe, it does draw out a wide range of the emotions from us. As a result, God's love is complex. He sees the pain in this world and is angry at the impact sin has here, and it is because of his love for us that leads to his anger against sin.

In addition to God's love, he is also described as holy.

This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
1 John 1:5

There is no sin in him, and sin cannot stand in his presence. God is holy.

And he is also just. Any crimes committed against his throne must be dealt with, otherwise he would not be a just God.

Because of his love, God wanted to share his goodness with man for eternity. But his holiness demands that sin be cast from his presence, and his justice demands sin be punished. In order for us to enjoy fellowship with God, we must not only be forgiven of sin, but we must also be cleansed from all unrighteousness and our sin must be punished.

This can only be done through the cross.

The Complexity of God's Love

The world around us has been stained by sin. It is filled with violence, abuse, abandonment, tyranny, and oppression.

How could a loving God not look down at these things and have wrath?

When we, or those we love, become victims of sin, we have wrath toward that sin. This anger is the result of our love for the victim, seeking justice for the offense.

In the same way, God's love for humanity results in anger towards the suffering caused by sin. It's precisely because of his love that he cannot remain indifferent to the pain and suffering sin brings. His holiness, which cannot allow any darkness or unrighteousness in his presence, further intensifies his anger.

God's justice demands that sin cannot go unpunished. Just as a crime committed against an earthly throne must be met with justice, God's divine justice requires the same. In his love for us, he desires our eternal fellowship with him. To achieve this, sin must be addressed, not ignored or brushed aside.

The Atoning Role of Christ

God's plan of salvation unfolds through Christ's sacrifice. This sinless, obedient Savior willingly bore God's wrath on our behalf. He not only paid the price for our sins but lived a life of perfect obedience.

Christ's sinless sacrifice serves as the means by which we can be forgiven, cleansed, and restored to a right relationship with God.

The Power of the Gospel

The heart of Christianity rests upon the gospel, which brings the transformative power of God's love into our lives. The apostle Paul, once a persecutor of Christians, experienced this power firsthand. His encounter with the risen Christ on the road to Damascus transformed his life.

The gospel is the power of God for salvation. Through the gospel, we find forgiveness, reconciliation, and the promise of eternal fellowship with God. It is through Christ's death and resurrection that we are freed from the enslavement of sin and invited into the promise of eternal life.

For believers, the gospel's power is life-changing. It transforms individuals from the depths of their sins to lives dedicated to spreading the gospel's message. This power is beyond the comprehension of the world, for it requires a deep understanding of God's justice and his love.

The Gospel's Revelation of God's Righteousness

The gospel serves as the perfect solution to a seemingly unsolvable dilemma: How can a righteous God forgive sin without compromising his holiness and justice? The answer becomes evident at the cross.

Through the cross, God's righteousness is revealed in all its glory. It demonstrates both his justice in judging sin and his mercy in justifying sinners. The curtain in the temple, torn in two upon Jesus's death, symbolizes the removal of separation between God and humanity, made possible by the atoning work of Christ.

God, in his righteousness, offers humanity a way to be reconciled to him without compromising who he is. In Christ's sacrifice, we find not only forgiveness but also righteousness bestowed upon us.
